1. Wash the bite
The first step in treating a mosquito bite is to disinfect the punctured skin. Wash it with warm water and soap, and apply an antiseptic lotion, Calendula lotion, gel or ointment. This will prevent itchiness, blisters, pus and other complications and will help the bite heal quickly. You can also apply over the counter corticosteroid creams but do not use these for more than 3 days at a stretch.
2. Aloe Vera gel
Aloe vera extracts or gel is one of the best natural remedies to treat mosquito bites quickly. Cut open the Aloe leaf and apply its transparent/ greenish gel directly on the bite. Aloe is an anti-inflammatory and soothing remedy that calms inflamed skin and accelerates the healing process. You can easily counter itchiness and swelling of mosquito bites with this all-natural remedy. Applying aloe vera gel or lotion to your skin at night before bedtime in mosquito infested areas can also prevent the bites in the first place.
3. Cold compress
In case of swelling or allergic reaction to the bites, apply ice packs or cool compresses to the skin. The cold lowers the swelling and prevents itchiness. You can make an essential oil compress by adding a few drops of Lavender or Rosemary essential oil to cool water. Soak a clean flannel cloth in the water, wring out the excess and apply it to the bitten areas. Essential oils bring down swelling and pain and also aid in quick recovery of the bites.

6. Lemon juice
Lemon juice is another way to stop mosquito bites from stinging and itching. Apply fresh lemon juice or rub a lemon peel gently on the bites. Lemon is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory. This helps the bites heal quickly and gives you quick relief. In case of open blisters, avoid the remedy as it can sting.
7. Garlic juice
Minced or crushed garlic can also heal mosquito bites and make them go away quickly. This is thanks to the natural wound-healing, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties of garlic. You can grate a bit of garlic and apply the juice on the bites. Alternatively, apply diluted garlic essential oil on the bites for speeding the healing process.
Table salt, sea salt or rock salt all contain antiseptic properties and can make the mosquito bites go away quickly. At the first sign of bite, apply a paste of salt with a bit of water to the inflamed skin to get immediate relief.
9. Rubbing alcohol
Not just a remedy to lower fever, rubbing alcohol can quickly stop mosquito bite pain and give you much needed relief from swelling, itchiness and redness of the skin. Take a sterile cotton wool and soak it in the alcohol. Gently wipe down the welts caused by mosquito bites. Repeat this remedy several times a day to ensure that the mosquito bites do not last long.
10. Over the counter anti-histamines
In case of severe itchiness that is impacting your sleep, take some Benadryl or over-the-counter anti-histamine. This is a surefire way to stop mosquito bites swelling and pain.
Listerine® is a wonderful remedy for halitosis which it can also help you get rid of lice, nits and mosquito bites. Soak a sterile cotton or Q-tip in the mouthwash and apply it all over the bitten skin for quick relief from pain, burning and itchiness.
Like mouthwash, toothpaste with baking soda and/or peppermint can also be applied to the afflicted areas to soothe inflammation and prevent scratching.
This miraculous pill can prevent heart attacks but did you know that it can also counter itchiness and swelling caused by bee stings, insect bites etc? Dissolve a couple of aspirin tablets in water and apply it to the bitten areas for quick relief from pain.
Honey is a fantastic remedy for all kinds of bites and stings, including mosquito bites. It contains compounds that neutralize the venom and acids caused by the mosquito saliva to put an immediate stop to itchiness, swelling and burning.
15. Apple cider vinegar
Organic and unfiltered apple cider vinegar with ‘mother’ intact can heal and soothe mosquito bites thanks to its cooling and anti-inflammatory action. Soak a clean cotton ball in undiluted vinegar and dab it onto the bites. Let the skin absorb the vinegar to take effect. For bites all over the body, add one cup of vinegar to your bath water and soak in it. To make the vinegar remedy more powerful, you can add a bit of baking soda to it and apply the paste on the bites.
16. Corn starch
Applying a paste of cornstarch in a bit of water can also heal the mosquito bites quickly. This remedy aids in absorption of the mosquito’s saliva and acids and takes away the pain and itchiness.
17. Prevention with DIY homemade mosquito repellent
Prevention is the best way to stop mosquito bites. Spray some mosquito repellent essential oils all around your campsite or sleeping areas. The oils that repel bugs and mosquitoes are Lemongrass, Neem, Citronella, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Melissa officinalis , Lemon oil etc. Add the oil to some distilled water and spray all over your bedding. You can also make a homemade mosquito repellent and mosquito bite prevention cream with the following recipes:
- 4 drops each of Thyme, Lavender and Peppermint oils
- 8 drops of Lemongrass oil
- 1 tsp Carrier oil or your favorite lotion
Mix all ingredients well. Apply all over your body to repel mosquitoes and stop mosquito bites. Repeat application every 2-3 hours. You can also diffuse these oils or keep a cotton wool soaked in them all over the bedroom.
