If you do not have essential oils, you can simply use virgin coconut oil to treat this infection. Apply the warm oil on affected areas 2-3 times a day. Coconut oil has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties which are useful in treating balanitis quickly. Also, you can fight the infection quickly from inside out by taking a few teaspoons of coconut oil internally.
5. Aloe Vera gel for balanitis
Aloe Vera gel is a soothing, anti-inflammatory remedy for this condition. Apply pure Aloe Vera extracted from the leaf of Aloe plant (or use commercial lotion or creams containing Aloe Vera extracts). Rub the gel on the tip of the penis and leave it on overnight. Repeat application after bathing. Your infection will clear up in a week.
Garlic is a potent remedy for treating this condition thanks to its anti-fungal and antimicrobial properties. Crush a few cloves of garlic and apply its juice all over the tip of the penile region. Let it air dry. Reapply several times a day for 2-3 days or until you feel better.
Yogurt is effective in treating yeast which is one of the factors that cause balanitis. Apply plain yogurt on the tip of the penis and leave it on for 20 minutes before washing off. Repeat daily before bath time. You can also eat yogurt to increase the good flora in the intestine and strengthen the immune system.
8. Practice hygiene
It is very important to practice good hygiene by retracting the foreskin of the penis while bathing. Wash the penis daily to remove accumulation of sweat and dirt. Parents should also teach this to boys aged 5 years and over. You can use a mild saline rinse to wash off the dried smegma and trapped sweat in the penile area.
9. Treat underlying medical conditions
Balanitis is often sexually transmitted. If your partner has a sexually transmitted disease, chances are you could develop irritation around the penis. So do take precautions or avoid intercourse until the infection is cured. Men with diabetes could develop this condition due to weakened immunity. Therefore, it is important to keep blood sugar levels in check. Young children with phimosis (a condition where the foreskin cannot be pulled back) are also susceptible to this infection. A minor surgical procedure can cure it.
10. Avoid allergens
Allergens such as harsh detergents, soaps, spermicides, lubricants, and certain types of condoms can also cause balanitis. Stay away from these as far as possible. Avoid over washing or scrubbing the penis harshly. Use a mild soap and warm water to clean the area. Also go for hypoallergenic condoms and mild detergents to prevent allergic reaction.
Over the counter medicines
If a yeast or fungi is the reason behind the infection, use over the counter clotrimazole or other antifungal creams twice a day. You can also use steroidal or antibiotic cream until the rash subsides.
If the above remedies for balanitis do not show results, you might need prescription medicines/antibiotics for treating it. See your doctor without further delay.
