Apart from heredity and genes, there are many cause of hair loss or hair fall in women, the main one being childbirth. Post partum hair fall occurs due to higher levels of hormones following delivery. Many women report significant hair fall in the first three months following childbirth. During pregnancy, the body produces many hormones that increase hair production. As a result, many women have their healthiest hair growth during pregnancy. Once the baby is born, these hormones balance out as a result of which there is hair fall in the process. So let us take a look at some remedies and supplements for postpartum hair loss.

1. Aloe Vera and essential oils
Make a mixture of tea tree oil, lavender oil and Aloe vera gel. Apply the mixture all over the scalp. Aloe vera stimulates the hair follicles and blocks the DHT hormone. The essential oils also alleviate hormonal hair loss so use this remedy at least 3 times a week. You can wash off the hair after 30 minutes (or the next morning) using a mild postpartum hair loss shampoo. Go for organic shampoos and conditioners with ingredients like Rosemary, Neem, Biotin, Saw Palmetto, Peppermint etc. Avoid shampoos with SLS, harsh dyes and color treatments when suffering from post pregnancy hair fall.
2. Apple cider vinegar
Make a solution of organic apple cider vinegar, tea tree lavender and peppermint essential oils, cod liver oil, grape seed oil and Aloe vera gel. Apply the mixture all over the scalp and hair and leave it on for at least 8 hours. Wash off as usual. You can also use raw apple cider vinegar as a final rinse after shampooing. If this stings your scalp, use a mixture of ACV with an organic shampoo to wash the hair. Some women have also benefited by drinking apple cider vinegar with water or juice on an empty stomach. This remedy curbs inflammation and strengthens the hair follicles from inside out. When used regularly, it can stop you from going bald after having a baby.
3. Curd/plain yogurt
Apply some curd to the hair and leave it on for a few hours before washing off with a mild shampoo. This remedy treats hair loss and also imparts shine to the hair. It also gets rid of dandruff and tinea infections.
Amla is Indian gooseberry, a small greenish fruit having a sharp, sour taste. It is packed with Vitamin C and is extremely beneficial for the hair. Amla not only reduces hair fall but also stimulates hair re-growth. These days, Amla is available in the market in the form of extracts, oils and powder. You can mix Amla powder with a bit of henna powder and make a paste of the mixture using a bit of water. Apply this paste all over the hair and wash off after 4-5 hours. This remedy not only curbs severe hair loss after childbirth, it also darkens grey hair. If you have blonde or light colored hair, this remedy could stain your hair reddish brown. If you do not want that, avoid using henna powder and only use amla powder for washing hair. Also consume amla pills, fresh amla or its juice. These products are readily available in the market. Other ways to use amla to curb hair loss post pregnancy are:
- Boil amla pieces in coconut oil and leave the mixture to steep overnight. Strain and apply the oil to the scalp every night to stimulate hair growth.
- Mix amla juice and lemon juice and apply the mixture on the bald areas. Wash off after a few hours. Use this remedy 2-3 times a week.
5. Drink fresh juices
One of the main causes of hair loss in women after childbirth is deficiency in iron and vitamins. Drinking fresh fruit and vegetable juices can help. Mix together fresh lettuce juice and spinach juice and drink half a liter of this mixture every day. You can also mix together carrot juice and alfalfa juice and drink it daily. Always use fresh ingredients when making these juices. Also take protein and iron supplements for postpartum hair loss. 6. Coconut oil and lemon juice
Mix together lemon or lime juice with coconut oil and massage the scalp well with this mixture. Leave it on overnight. This remedy stimulates hair growth in women and also lengthens the hair.
7. Coconut milk
Massage coconut milk all over the hair and scalp. Wash off with warm water and organic shampoo after 30 minutes. Use this remedy once a week for luxurious hair growth.
8. Castor oil
Massaging the hair and scalp with castor oil can also help prevent hair loss. Castor oil also stimulates new hair growth.
9. Onion juice
A liberal application of onion juice in balding areas can prevent hair fall post delivery. Use this remedy before washing your hair at least 2 times a week for luxurious hair growth.
10. Red raspberry leaf tea
This is a great remedy to curb hair fall caused due to hormonal imbalance. Drink 2-3 cups of organic red raspberry leaf tea daily. Nursing mothers must consult their doctor before using this remedy.
Take kelp supplements daily. You can take powder or pills as available. Consult your doctor in case you are breastfeeding.
12. Homeopathic remedies for post pregnancy hair fall
Hair fall after delivery can be prevented and treated with homeopathy.
- Arsenicum Album- This is used for treating post partum hair fall and depression.
- Graphites and Thuja-This is recommended for women having stomach issues and hair loss.
- Slicea, Phosphorus –Both are very beneficial post-partum hair fall remedies.
- Kali carbonicum- Recommended for thinning hair
- Lycopodium-This natural hair loss remedy is also beneficial for preventing graying of hair.
13. Food grade diatomaceous earth
Mix a teaspoon of food grade Diatomaceous Earth powder with your oatmeal, smoothies, mashed potatoes etc. Start small, as this remedy is a detoxifier and can cause stomach issues. Work your way up to a tablespoon. It will provide you with tons of minerals and vitamins. If you are breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before taking this remedy.
14. Blackstrap molasses
Blackstrap molasses can reduce anemia and other vitamin and mineral deficiencies that could cause hair fall after delivery. Take a tablespoon of BSM daily. Speak to your doctor before taking this remedy in case you are nursing your baby.
15. Cayenne pepper
Cayenne pepper fights inflammation. Take cayenne supplements or add it to some blackstrap molasses and organic apple cider vinegar. Drink the mixture daily to strengthen hair follicles inside out.
16. Supplements for postpartum hair loss
Take iron, protein, zinc and Biotin. A good multivitamin and mineral pill can provide you with most minerals and vitamins you need for healthy hair. You especially need B complex and folic acid. Speak to your OB/GYN about the best supplements for postpartum hair loss. Follow a good diet with leafy green vegetables, lean protein, eggs, etc.
17. Brushing technique
Another powerful natural home remedy for preventing hair fall after pregnancy is to brush the hair upside down using a boar bristle brush. This stimulates blood circulation to the scalp and enhances hair growth.
