Menstruation, while necessary, can bring with it a plethora of problems. Period pain or menstrual cramps-also known as dysmenorrheal- can affect a woman’s ability to function normally. Typically, most women experience menstrual cramps in the abdomen, back, thighs, legs and breasts around the time the menstruation is about to begin. In many women, the pain lasts until the period begins. Some women suffer longer and experience pain until the period ends. Period pain can affect women of all ages. It can be described as a cramping pain which radiates from the abdomen, lower back and down the thighs. A rise in chemicals called prostaglandins which caused uterine contractions, leads to period pain. Today we will take a look at some home remedies for severe menstrual cramps or period pain.

1. Hot compress
Use a hot water bottle or hot water bag to ease menstrual cramps. Apply heat on the abdomen, lower back and thighs continuously for 20 minutes. This will help relax the muscles and stop period pain. Repeat this remedy as needed throughout the day. It is best to take plenty of rest during this phase.
2. Take a hot bath
In order to relieve period cramps fast, soak in a hot tub bath mixed with some Epsom salts. The magnesium in the bath salts relaxes the back and abdominal muscles giving you much needed relief. Soak for at least 15-20 minutes.
3. Drink raspberry leaf tea

7. Avoid salty foods

16. Magnesium and calcium
Take calcium and magnesium supplements to prevent aches and pains related to periods. Talk to your doctor about the right dosage. In general, you need 500 mg of Magnesium and about a 1000 mg of calcium every day.
17. Other herbs for period pain relief
Many other herbal remedies can help prevent period pain. These include lady’s mantle, dong quai, oregano, yarrow. You can take them in the form of tinctures or tea. Some of them are also available in the form of pills. Talk to a herbalist before use.
