Edema is a swelling of tissues caused by excess fluid accumulation. It is also called dropsy and could affect many different body parts. Edema may occur after surgery, or due to improper diet and lifestyle habits. Dehydration and urinary obstruction can also give rise to edema. Today we will take a look at some natural ways to cure edema in the face and other areas of the body.

1. Dietary changes
One of the best remedies to reduce edema in face is to eat a diet low in sodium, rich in vitamins and high in calories. Patients must also drink plenty of water. Avoid alcoholic beverages and caffeinated drinks which tend to increase swelling further. Also eat as organic as possible. Stay away from foods containing artificial dyes, preservatives, nitrates etc. Nitrates are particularly bad as they increase swelling. Cook all your meals in pink salt instead of white salt.
2. Potatoes remedy for edema
This is an old Irish remedy for dropsy used since centuries. Clean and peel 2-3 potatoes and add the peels to 2 cups of boiling water. Reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes. Strain the mixture and add the liquid to a glass of water or cranberry juice. Drink the mixture a least 4 times a day to reduce swelling. (Avoid this remedy if you are taking blood thinners or are a heart patient).
3. Homeopathic remedies for lymph system drainage
Many homeopathic remedies can help in purifying the lymph system and strengthening the connective tissues. They also stimulate extraction of acids, metabolic wastes and toxins to lower the swelling. Take the following homeopathic remedies after consulting a homeopath:
- Badiaga D12-Take 10 pellets two times daily for 4 weeks.
- Thuja D 12- Take 10 pellets twice daily for 4 weeks.
- Mercurius solubilis D12-for 4 weeks, 10 pellets 4 times a day.
4. ALA or Alpha Lipoic acid
Take up to 600 mg ALA or alpha lipoic acid per day for several days until the swelling in the face, ankles or arms comes down.
Beetroot and beet juice has helped many people with swelling on the feet walk normally again and even wear footwear again. Cook some beets until they are soft and eat them daily. You can also blend beets with some apples and drink this red juice every day.
6. Apple cider vinegar
Two teaspoons of organic apple cider vinegar taken on an empty stomach can help relieve swelling. It is also a good idea to take some before meals. This remedy also aids weight loss.
7. Lemon juice
Squeeze the juice of one lemon in a glass of water and drink it on an empty stomach. Lemon juice, like apple cider vinegar is anti-inflammatory and makes the body alkaline. This remedy works to reduce swelling post surgery.
8. Oil pulling
Oil pulling reduces toxins and can prevent swelling in arms, feet and face. Swish some sesame or coconut oil around the mouth vigorously for 15-20 minutes. Spit out the oil do not swallow. This contains all the toxins that can give relief from edema.
9. Apple juice with Olive oil
Another powerful remedy for dropsy is a mixture of apple juice and olive oil. Mix together a tablespoon of olive oil and a glass of apple juice. Drink the mixture on an empty stomach each morning for several days until the swelling goes down. This remedy is also prescribed for air passengers who get a swelling after a long flight.
Asparagus acts as a natural diuretic. So eat plenty of asparagus.
11. Herbs for Edema
- Butcher’s broom-Take up to 1000 mg of Butcher’s Broom supplement to reduce veins and swelling on ankles and face.
- Dandelion– Dandelion tea can also act as a diuretic and reduce swelling.
- Feverfew tea-Boil a cup of water and pour it over 2 tsp of dried feverfew herb. Cover and steep for 15 minutes. You can strain the tea and add some honey to sweeten it. Drink the tea once or twice daily for several days until the swelling comes down.
- Red vine leaf and black cohosh also work.
Calcium and magnesium are necessary for reducing pre-menstrual edema. Take a multivitamin/mineral pill with at least 1200 mg of Calcium and 200-400 mg of Magnesium. Also take vitamin B6. Potassium is also important for balancing sodium and an imbalance of these two electrolytes causes swelling and other issues. Eat plenty of bananas, black strap molasses, cream of tartar and other foods rich in potassium. Amino acid Taurine is also a must for reducing edema. Chromium deficiency can also give rise to swelling.
13. Epsom salt bath
Soaking in Epsom salt baths can also help reduce swelling. The salts are absorbed by the skin and prevent water retention. Soaking in warm bath with bath salts can also relieve pain.
